Rookies (Boys and Girls age 3) and Dribblers (Boys and Girls ages 4-5)

Our 2010 Summer season runs June - August

What are the Rookies and Dibblers?  The Rookies (age 3) and Dribblers (ages 4-5) are for boys and girls of all skill and experience levels. Our goal is to provide a low-stress, non-competitive environment where kids can expect to be active and have a great time. We hope that players will exit our program with, not only a fun and educational basketball experience behind them, but with newly acquired fitness and health habits that will remain with them for a life-time.

3, 4 and 5 year olds playing basketball - is that possible? Now, more than ever, parents want to start their children in athletic activities at increasingly younger ages. The research on the matter suggests that this early entry into sports can be highly beneficial to children IF the correct developmentally appropriate tasks are emphasized and stress and competition levels remain low. The Rookies and Dribblers will strive to do just that. We will begin the season by teaching and practicing the various locomotive, axial, and coordination skills that serve as a base for all related basketball skills. Cooperation and teamwork skills will also be a main focus. As the season continues, sessions will gradually begin to look less and less like a movement education class, and more like a basketball practice.

When are the sessions? Sessions are twice a week, once on a weeknight at either 5:00 or 6:00 pm, and once on Saturday. Sessions for Rookies (age 3) will last 45 minutes, and sessions for Dribblers (ages 4-5) will last an hour. The season will run for seven weeks, starting in July and ending in August. Weeknights will be geared toward teaching and drilling skills, and Saturdays will give players opportunities to demonstrate, have fun with, and practice their skills. Also on Saturdays, we will learn about and practice game situations, and by the end of the season, we will be playing full-length, officiated, 5 on 5 games!

Divisions: This summer we will offer three different co-ed divisions!

Rookies for boys and girls age 3

Dribblers for boys and girls ages 4-5

Second Year Dribblers for boys and girls age 5 (with previous Foothill Hoops Dribblers experience)

Each division will play with "mini" sized basketballs and play on either 4' or 5' (Rookies) or 6' baskets (Dribblers).

All players will receive a full uniform, an end of the season award, and families will be able to look at practice and game pictures on-line. Registration for each division is $179 per player, with discounts available for siblings.

Who teaches?  All sessions will be taught the by Foothill Hoops staff. Jonathan Young, Valerie Salgado, and Rebecca Chadwick (all credentialed teachers) will lead the sessions. Of course, there are opportunities for volunteers to get on the court and work with the kids. If you are interested in coaching, just let us know on the registration form!
